Lines of Inquiry

During this Spring 2018 semester I will explore the following areas in relation to theatre and writing in the classroom:

  • What genres are currently being assigned as formal writing tasks in Theatre and Performance classes? I will interview instructors and draw from syllabi of courses taught at two CUNY Colleges, Hunter College and City College.
  • How can writing be implemented in informal ways to foster critical thinking about plays, performances, and performance traditions?
  • What are the scaffolding steps that can facilitate longer or more complex assignments? How can course goals offer directions for developing assignments?
  • How can assignments be better clarified for students in terms of goals, execution, and grading?
  • Which tasks are better suited as homework and which ones can more readily be implemented during class time?
  • What are the syllabus changes needed for a writing intensive course?
  • How can writing be integrated into acting and directing courses?
  • What kind of technological tools can facilitate integration of teaching with writing and performance?
